The online newsletter of the Ancient Tree Forum and the Ancient Tree Hunt June 2006

Hello everyone

Welcome to our summer ancient tree-mail.
Are you passionate enough about ancient trees to help us take our Ancient Tree Hunt Project into an exciting new phase? One of the two new posts we are advertising might be for you or maybe you like getting in close and personal with trees. If so, then why not find out more by joining us at one of our up-and-coming events. You will probably cry with us at the loss of one of Scotland's top trees or maybe choose to help us with 'ancient tree care' in historic landscapes by promoting our brand new leaflet.

Lead a team of tree hunters

As you know the Woodland Trust is working in partnership with the Ancient Tree Forum and the Tree Register to encourage greater protection of ancient trees through our Ancient Tree Hunt. We now have Heritage Lottery Funding and we need a team to lead this exciting project. We are looking for a Project Manager and a Senior Verifier but the closing date is 14 June so don't delay in putting in your application.

Out and about...

Don't miss our Ancient Tree Forum visit to the
New Forest on Thursday 8 June. A great opportunity to find out more about this very special place and meet the Knightwood Oak in the company of people from a wide range of backgrounds. If you can't make it then please tell others to come along.

We anticipate the usual 'breadth' of discussion about trees, heritage, wildlife, landscape and management. There should be a good turnout of ATF Board members too if you want to lobby them!

Please book online if you would like to join us

Even more events...

Watch out also on the events pages for other county ATF events like the ones in Devon. Book in for the next one at Escot Park (a 200 acre of Capability Brown designed landscape) in August. There are many more in the pipeline due to the work of the Devon branch of the ATF.

Farewell old friend

Gone! One of Scotlands 100 heritage trees hit the ground recently. The Newbattle Sycamore has fallen. However the good news is that the joint ATF, Arboricultural Association, Tree Council, Woodland Trust display in the Scottish Parliament recently excited considerable interest in heritage trees. We are lobbying for changes in the Planning Bill which is on its way through the Scottish Parliament and in particular for a statutory register of trees of special interest.

Ancient Tree Guide

Free copies of our Ancient Tree Guide No.2: Trees in historic parks and landscape gardens are now available. Let us know if you would like copies to be sent to you. Alternatively, you can view and download the guide from our website.

Our new 12 page publication can be downloaded as a pdf

Basque axemen

Go and see how the Spanish Basque axemen cut their pollards at Burnham Beeches. A forester from the Basque country will be demonstrating traditional cutting of pollards. A live demonstration will be held in early July. More details can be found on our events page.

To close

Keep in touch, rant and rail about the demise of old trees and go and hug one today to tell it to hang on until the cavalry get there. As we go to press we are campaigning for a future for the T'yr-ash oak at Crickhowell - fingers crossed...

Best wishes

Jill
PS. Do you know your tree species?, or are you a tree botanist or a dendrologist? We are currently working on a species dictionary of UK trees and are looking for volunteer help. Let us know, would love to hear from you.

The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a
green thing that stands in the way. Some see Nature all ridicule and
deformity, and some scarce see Nature at all. But to the eyes of the
man of imagination, Nature is Imagination itself.

The Letters)
