Spring 2006 - Community Woodland Network subscribers' newsletter

Hello all
Welcome to our Community Woodland Network Newsletter. I hope you enjoy reading the various reports and articles we’ve gathered together. It's been a busy period for us at the Trust, completing our tree-planting projects for the season and by the number of applications we've had for community tree-planting grants and packs of trees, you have been busy too! If you haven't had a look at the website for a while, please do, as we've made a number of improvements which we hope you will like. We have also seen an increase in the number of postings in the interactive area, so please keep them coming and help those with queries where you can.

The good wood guide

The Good Wood Guide is now online to help you make the best choice when buying or using wood for your next DIY, self-build or construction project.

Spotlight on Gunton Wood Community Project

The group set themselves up in 1998 to restore local authority owned Gunton Wood in Lowestoft, Suffolk, which had been neglected for over 50 years. Now with over 80 members and a regular work party of 10 plus, they have managed to achieve a lot over recent years including 450 work parties in six years! The 2.5 hectare woodland is new and secondary broadleaf and includes a 150 year old lime avenue and specimen trees including black poplar. They were awarded a Queens Golden Jubilee Award in 2003 and the wood declared a local nature reserve in 2004. For more information on the group, have a look at their latest newsletter or visit the website which is under construction. We also have their Trafalgar news story on the CWN website.

Hedge and Copse Packs over 130,000 more trees in the ground

Over 1,800 schools and youth groups have registered for a pack of trees this spring and that's on top of the 2,500 last autumn. It's been tremendously popular and allowed even more children to get involved in our Tree For All project.

If you know of a school or youth group that would like to get involved this coming autumn, then please pass on the website address.

Tree Planting Grants

Our Community Tree Planting Grants have again been very popular this winter with even more groups than last year getting involved.

We have just secured funding for 2006/7 so if you are planning a late winter planting event or are already organising one for next autumn, then register your event with us and we may be able to help.

Sustainability Grants

We have issued over 70 grants to various woodland groups over the past four years and are hoping to offer a similar scheme from April this year. Keep an eye on the website for more details as we approach the new financial year! If we have already provided you with a grant over the last 12 months and you haven't sent in your report, can you please do so by the end of April. Thank you!!

Website news

The website has undergone some recent changes with new sections for Scotland and Wales. We are also making it easier for people to get in touch with each other by adding e-mail and website contact details to your groups listing. We won't do this without your agreement first so please let us know if you are happy for us to do so. A separate e-mail will be coming to remind you about this.

Bedfordshire Ancient Woodland Project - encouraging dormice

From the original 30 dormice released into Maulden Woods in 2001 there are signs that the growing population is spreading out. The hazel coppice is creating the perfect habitat for dormice. Greensand Trust along with the Bedfordshire Dormouse Group and the Forestry Commission are carrying out the monitoring. For more information email or go to the website

Re-wilding Ennerdale!

Re-wilding is a term that originated from the USA. It describes the process of allowing tracts of land to return to their natural states...or as natural as they can be.

You may have heard the recent Radio 4 Nature programme about re-wilding, and the long term intentions for Ennerdale in Cumbria. It was a fascinating programme with quite a lot of reference to bringing back broadleaf woodland in place of the conifer. There is a dedicated website for the project, you can also listen to the programme again.
