'ello 'ello 'uggers!

Welcome to our ancient tree-mail. Find out below how our Ancient Tree Hunt project is doing and how you can volunteer to help us check records of veteran and ancient trees, which are starting to flood in, come and see some stunning treescapes in the Lake District in October, or 'uggers...maybe you want to hear about some French veterans at the 'colloque européen sur les trognes'

Oh to be in...the Lake District in beautiful, autumnal October

Join us at Glenamara Park and Glencoyne Park on Thursday 12 October or at Greystoke Castle and Hutton-in-the-Forest on Friday 13 October. The two-day programme will provide a real contrast between trees, owners and management. We are also planning a social event on the Thursday evening. Plenty of accommodation is available in the area at this time of year, ranging from YHA to the poshest hotels.

To book online see our events pages. If you send in a reply for each day and the evening 'do' separately its easier for us to keep track - we hope!

Meet the Ancient Tree Hunt 'team'

We are delighted to announce that Nikki Williams who is currently the Property Manager of The Workhouse, an award winning National Trust visitor centre, will be starting with us in October as our project manager. She will be supported by Kath Owen as Senior Verifier and Amanda Sharpe as project co-ordinator. David Alderman, Registrar for the Tree Register stays with us as our advisor on all records. You will be hearing more from them in the future!

Volunteer to be a Verifier - what's that all about then?

Are you good with maps and do you have your own transport? Do you know your trees and enjoy using your computer? As you know, we want people to go out and look for fat, old trees. However, we need to build a network of specialist volunteers to help check the ancient tree information logged by the public. This is where you can help. The project team would like to hear from you, if you are interested in helping us to 'ground truth' information sent in by the public. We can provide full training and support, and relevant expenses are covered. Details of Ancient Tree Hunt - Volunteer Verifier

So what exactly is a 'trogne'?

All will be explained at the first European seminar on 'trognes' at Vendome from 26 - 28 October 2006. Speakers include Ted Green, Helen Read, Jes Dagley and lots of others from France, Spain and hopefully, further a field. Don't worry - there will be lots of English spoken there too! Take a look at the programme.

Ancient Tree Guide

Don't forget you can get free copies of our Ancient Tree Guide No.2: Trees in historic parks and landscape gardens are now available. Let us know if you would like copies to be sent to you. Alternatively, you can view and download the guide from our website.

Our new 12 page publication can be downloaded as a pdf

To close

Tell us your news or about any events you have planned to get people 'up close and personal' with great trees. Stay cool or dry - get inside the trunk of an old tree...

Best wishes

As the poet said, 'Only God can make a tree' -  probably because it's so hard to figure out how to get the bark on.
