The online newsletter of the Ancient Tree Forum and the Ancient Tree Hunt February 2006

Hello everyone
Welcome to our first ancient tree-mail of 2006. There are lots of exciting international and local events to tell you about that are coming up soon and with your help we would like to find and record 10,000 trees for our map before the end of the year.

Out and about...

Don't miss our Ancient Tree Forum visit to Langley Park and Black Park in Buckinghamshire in March.

The Heritage Lottery Fund is contributing to major restoration works at both sites and we'll find out about the plans for the ancient trees and the wildlife at both these busy parks - see event details on our events pages.

Please book online if you would like to join us

Avenues at Risk

There are still places on the Avenues at Risk conference to be held in London on Thursday 23 March 2003. It should be nicely controversial with our own Ted Green campaigning for the old trees in avenues to be kept in restoration projects. Go along and give him some support!

Sweden anyone?

Had you thought about going to the oak conference in Sweden in May? The theme is `The oak - history, ecology, management and planning`. It will be held in English and there will be speakers from Holland, England, Germany and Sweden including Keith Alexander, Vikki Forbes, Neville Fay and Ted Green from the ATF. Full details on our events pages.

We challenge you

Did you set yourself a New Year's resolution to help map ancient trees? Last year more than 700 trees were added to our map from volunteers in the Shropshire Hills AONB Veteran Tree Project. Over 700 people went walking and surveying - that's one tree per person on average. Our challenge to each one of you this year is to record a tree with us every month. If you all recorded one tree per month we would reach our target of 10,000 ever so easily. It's a one-off action for each tree but it becomes a record in perpetuity. Record your tree via email

To close

When you go for your healthy walk keep your eyes open for any interesting trees in your neighbourhood or on holiday - we want to hear about old trees in other countries too. If you have any stories or events you would like featured in the next issue please let us have these by the end of February 2006.

Best wishes

Jill

It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanates from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.
(Robert Louis Stevenson)
