Dear phenology recorders

During October keep looking out for first and full tints in leaves – as the nights begin to cool, this process will begin to speed up. Why do leaves change colour? (PDF)

Swifts left our shores some time ago (see our results map), but you may still see a lingering house martin or swallow until the end of October.

Keep an eye out too for winter migrants: fieldfares and redwings should be arriving in the UK over the next few weeks.

Robert Marsham The Longer the Better
Robert Marsham, the founding father of phenology, was one of the pioneers of long-term data gathering when he started recording the ‘Indications of Spring’ on his Norfolk estate in 1736, subsequently continued by his descendents until 1958. The Linnean Society, London, will hold a meeting on 22 October to celebrate the use of long term data sets to commemorate the 300th anniversary of his birth. How to take part
