The Woodland Trust Annual Review 2005

Dear Supporter

One of the most exciting moments for me, in the last six months, was when I spotted my first ever red-tailed bumblebee. This is one of the six species we asked you to look out for this year, as part of Springwatch in association with the BBC. But did you know that in last year's campaign, over 80,000 of you also recorded things, generating over 160,000 entries?

That's one of the fascinating facts just revealed in our Annual Review. Other interesting statistics are that we've now engaged over a quarter of a million people with the Tree For All campaign and had over two million visitor sessions to our family of websites. If you're a member, we'll be posting out your copy this week. However, you can also view it online.

We're constantly developing new and innovative web-based resources to help you get more involved in our work. One of these is our new woodland dedication website. My family asked friends and acquaintances to donate money for trees instead of buying flowers in memory of my grandfather. Everyone felt it was a wonderful and appropriate way to remember him.

However, commemorating the life of someone dear to you is only one type of woodland dedication. We all have life changing events... a new birth, a wedding or a special anniversary. Woodland dedications are a wonderful way to mark these in a lasting way.

We'd also really like to know what you think of the new woodland dedication website. Please take a few moments to visit it and complete our short questionnaire.

Kind regards,
Sue Holden, chief executive

Blackbush Shaw

Help extend Darwin's landscape heritage
We are appealing for your help with a number of UK projects, one of which is to acquire land to extend Blackbush Shaw and its neighbour, Twenty Acre Shaw. These two ancient woods in the Downe Valley, form part of the landscape in which Charles Darwin once lived. Please donate now

Woodland Creation Conference

Woodland creation comes to Manchester
Bookings are now being taken for our seminal conference on woodland creation on 17 - 18 October at The Lowry in Manchester. It promises to be an inspiring and informative platform of debate for both UK and international participants. Book your place now!

Woodland eggs

Palace lays on children's egg-stravaganza
Woodland Eggs, produced by Deans Foods and distributed by Sainsbury's, were featured on the menu of a children's party held by the Queen at Buckingham Palace on 25 June. 1p is donated to the Woodland Trust for each 10 or 12 pack of eggs sold. More about this and other greener products

Ledmore and Migdale

Our woods win audit's approval
An audit of Trust woods has revealed that we're meeting the highest standards of woodland management. The results, part of an annual survey by the Soil Association into sustainable forestry management against criteria laid down by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), demonstrate that we practice what we preach. Children from Northern Ireland

Young tree champions may need more help
Research conducted in Northern Ireland into children's attitudes to woodland has revealed that though 80% think trees are important and 40% have planted a tree, the majority know little about them and only 2% think of woodland as somewhere to play and learn outdoors. Report

Hainault. WTPL

Thousands help celebrate Hainault's centenary
To celebrate the centenary of Hainault Forest as a public open space, we're co-hosting an event (sponsored by BT) with the London Borough of Redbridge on 15 July. Thousands are expected to attend, including Lord Carrington who will recreate the ceremony at which his uncle dedicated the site to the people in 1906. Details

Royal Welsh Show

Woodland Trust at the Royal Welsh Show
Do come along and visit the Woodland Trust's stand at the Royal Welsh Show, Builth Wells, on 24 - 27 July. Details can be found on our fully functional bilingual website, which gives further information about our range of work in Wales.
