Alder catkins. Julian BlackDear Supporter

Is this the end of winter? Over the last few weeks, I've found it really uplifting to see the first signs of spring. Snowdrops as flashes of bright white illuminating February's bare landscapes; the purple hue of alder catkins colouring the canopies and perfect, new emerald buds bursting through.

The changing seasons are nowhere more apparent and more beautiful than in a woodland. But what is climate change doing to our seasons and is winter getting shorter? By taking part in our Springwatch survey, run jointly with the BBC you can help us to answer this question. Getting involved is fascinating, extremely important and you don't have to be a nature expert.

We've also got the latest on airport expansion and our line on a proposed badger cull. On a lighter note, we have ten pairs of Ideal Home Exhibition tickets to be won.

Enjoy spring in your area and tell us about it if you can!

P.S. It's a perfect time for a walk in the woods. There are more than 1,000 Trust sites open to the public. Find out about woods near you.

Stop the badger cull

Stop the badger cull
In a misguided attempt to tackle Bovine TB (and against their own scientific evidence), the Government is consulting on plans to cull large numbers of badgers. We want people to help stop this slaughter by responding to the consultation and objecting to these proposals.

Red-tailed bumble bee. Margaret Barton

Want to bee a recorder?
Could you take part in our Springwatch survey by looking out for the distinctive red-tailed bee? We provide a description of the species that will make it a doddle for even the newest nature watcher to spot. The results will give us vital clues about climate change informing our phenology work.

Ideal Home tickets

Win tickets for the Ideal Home Show
Recycling will be taking centre stage at the 2006 Ideal Home Show and we'll be there announcing the results of this year's Christmas Card Recycling scheme. Ten pairs of tickets are up for grabs. The Show runs from 9 Mar. - 2 Apr. at Earls Court, London

Airport expansion

Airport expansion latest
Thanks to those who responded to the appeal in the last e-news on Luton Airport's masterplan. Now we need your help to influence planning proposals for Stansted and Birmingham Int'l Airport, which are set to destroy irreplaceable ancient woodland.
