Dear Supporter
We have been lobbying for a cut in greenhouse gas emissions
to help tackle climate change, the greatest threat to
ancient woodland and its wildlife.
I greet with dismay therefore, the Government?s recent
announcement that the UK will probably fail to meet its own target
for reducing emissions by 20 per cent by 2010.
If like me, you think that more must be done to reduce the
threat to our precious planet, please read the first story
below, in which we outline what
action must be taken.
Worryingly, our changing climate already appears to be
having a significant impact on the timing of
Nature?s Calendar and the frequency and cover of
woodland plants. I have also just been reading results from the most
comprehensive
woodland bird survey for 20 years, revealing substantial
changes in bird populations, some of which may be linked.
On a more positive note, I am pleased to tell you that Siān
Lloyd, weather forecaster and TV personality, just launched
our first
tree-planting event at Wentwood Forest, which we saved
thanks to your help. Restoration work on Wales? largest
ancient woodland is due to start soon.
Sue Holden
Chief executive, the Woodland Trust
PS I am delighted to announce that our membership has just reached 150,000!
