Dear Supporter
We're now well into May and summer is on the way. However,
there is still time to look out for
bluebells, which have arrived late this year - over 100 Woodland Trust woods burst into bloom
with bluebells during this month. I visited two of them on
Sunday in Wales - the bluebells were spectacular! Please check out our
website for details of
bluebells woods near you.
I'm very concerned that at least six irreplaceable ancient
bluebell woods are threatened if the proposed plans to
expand Stansted and Luton get the go-ahead. You can help
join the campaign to save these important sites, by
taking part in the
European Day of Action on airport
expansion taking place on June 10th.
Unfortunately, Pencoedtre Wood is also under threat in Wales.
An ancient woodland and
potential SSSI near Barry, Pencoedtre is in danger of being bulldozed
to make way for new housing and industrial units. With your
help, we want to
save this site from destruction.
Living proof of what our campaigns can achieve is found in
Penn Wood in the Chilterns, which I had the pleasure of
visiting recently. Penn Wood, one of the UK's last remaining
large areas of ancient woodland, was saved from being turned
into a golf course after the Trust and local groups launched
an urgent £1 million appeal in April 1999 to purchase the
wood. This target was achieved through a combination of
grants and public generosity - including a significant
contribution of over £200,000 provided by five unrestricted
legacies.
Legacies are a vital source of income for us, from funding
the acquisition of threatened woodland to supporting
woodland creation. Find out more about how legacies helped
save Penn Wood and other important woods by visiting our
newly revamped
legacy website.
