Dear phenology recorders and subscribers,

The East Midlands, where I live, is one of the last places in the UK to see frogspawn, so I was delighted when it finally arrived in my pond, amidst a lot of frantic croaking! Some was sadly frozen in the cold spell in late March, but I now have a few surviving tadpoles.

The live maps clearly illustrate the stop-start spring we had from January to March. Look at the frogspawn map for instance, showing three peaks of activity.

April is the month to look out for first leafing in many of our trees, flowering of elder and hawthorn, and woods alive with bluebells and anemones. There will also be a lot of bird nesting activity. Please do tell us what you have seen.

Best wishes

The budget was a paler shade of green

Was it an eco-friendly budget? Not according to Dr James Cooper from the Woodland Trust. He says it was too cautious and the Trust would have liked to see more action on aviation.
